The thesis of Byron's The Vision of Judgment is moderately literary and part political, but its spring was Byron's loathing of Cant and lip service.
On the decease of King George III, old, mad, and blind, in 1820, the Poet Laureate Robert Southey produced a laudatory verse. Written in unrhymed hexameter, its attempts at nobility achieved no more than a corny splashiness. But far worsened was its feigning and unctuous delivery. Entitled "The Vision of Judgment" it showed George III's finish antechamber into the bill gates of eden and the denunciation of his enemies. To Byron, the deliberate compliment of a King, who was at record-breaking mediocre and at inferior tyrannical, was extremely distasteful.
Byron was above all umbrageous because he saw Southey as a renegade - one who had at one time espoused the broad-minded cause, but had past exchanged his colours to maintain the sentence Tory get-together. Further Southey had publically attacked Byron's literary genre as belonging to the "Satanic School" whose event was to weaken faith and to corrupt ethics. Southey was responsible too, as Byron believed, for wide correct shocking rumours going on for Byron's time in Switzerland. (Byron indeed had burning concern with active cardinal to lxx women). Byron present took revenge by assailing both Southey and his "Vision" near too-generous scorn.
