Soft floppy ears, brown soulful eyes, and a nose for food. What kind of animal does this describe$%: Why, a Beagle, of course.

Seven years ago a co-worker asked me if I could take a puppy she had bought off her hands. She felt she could not take care of him. I went to her house and found an adorable friendly little puppy waiting for me. It was love at first sight.

I have had many dogs in my life, but this was my first Beagle. After I brought him home I found I had a lot of research to do to understand the way a Beagle thinks. They are a very unique type of dog.

Don't get me wrong, Beagles are sweet, wonderful dogs. With a desire to be social and an even temperament, they make a great family pet. They love to spend time with their owners and are very good with children. But Beagles do have some behavior issues potential owners need to be aware of before they adopt one.

Curiosity should be the Beagle's motto. Any interesting scent they pick up they want to explore. It has been bred into them and is why they make excellent hunting dogs. It is also why you should never walk your Beagle without a leash. Even the best trained Beagle can get distracted by a new smell, taking off at a run to follow it and completely ignoring your calls to stop.

Beagles can be stubborn, determined and willful creatures. When considering a beagle as a pet, be prepared to pay to have your new friend go through obedience training. While all dogs should be trained; Beagles benefit greatly from it. You will want to be sure the trainer you pick has experience with them so your furry friend gets the best training possible.

Beagles are very social animals. They do not like to be left alone for long periods of time. If you are going to be gone a lot during the day or night, consider buying two so they have company. When lonely or frightened, this breed has a loud baying cry that will annoy neighbors. Not all Beagles will do this, but if you have picked one that does, it can create problems where you live.

Small and study, Beagles can do okay in an apartment as long as they get a lot of attention and plenty of outdoor time. They love to play outside and even a small yard is big enough for them to play in. They have tons of energy and love to go for long walks.

Beagles have a smooth, short coat that is easy to care for. Bathe them using a conditioning shampoo, especially during the winter months, to help keep their skin moisturized. A good brushing afterwards will handle any loose hair. Always check your Beagle's ears carefully for infection and keep his nails trimmed regularly.

During my research, I found that Beagles can develop several medical conditions, especially as they get older. They are prone to ear infections, skin disorders and hip and joint problems. Knowing about the issues can help you as an owner recognize these problems if they develop. Good veterinarian care is essential for your Beagle's continued health.

Lastly, some Beagles can be neurotic. Over-breeding and amateur breeders can explain away a lot of the Beagles with neurotic behaviors, including biting, moodiness, mindless noise, and general nastiness. I have not seen this in my Beagle, but have heard of other Beagle owners who have experienced it. Spending time with the puppy you choose, before purchasing him, will help you weed out the ones with problems. Also, asking for references from past clients, then making the call and asking if their puppy has any of these tendencies will help make your choice easier.

I spent a lot of time researching the Beagle breed after bringing our new four-legged friend home. But the real learning came from spending time with him. Beagles are wonderful dogs and will make anyone a very special and loyal friend.
